The regions are further subdivided into districts (Kazakh: аудандар, romanized: audandar; sg аудан, audan; Russian: районы, romanized: rayony; sg район, rayon). Three cities, Shymkent, Almaty, and the capital Astana, do not belong to their surrounding regions.
